Resurfacing In Croydon (Easter 2021)

Croydon Tramlink – Lower Addiscombe road carriageway & footway resurfacing. Working in conjunction with Volkerrail and their ongoing maintenance programme for the Croydon Tramlink, London Surfacing were responsible for re-laying the carriageway & associated footpaths & reinstating the line marking for the crossover section in Lower Addiscombe road, next to the Addiscombe tram stop.

The rails within the carriageway were being replaced by Volkerrail & would be excavated by London Surfacing removing the original tarmac surface, enabling Volker to break out the concrete shoulders that encase the rails

As is usual when working on the tram line, the section of the service was shutdown & strict project completion dates in place to be able to hand back to Volker to install the new rails & Tramlink for them to open the line & resume service.

Working over the holidays.

The work took place over the Easter holidays, starting on Good Friday through to the following Wednesday. The carriageway was broken out with a 1m planer & trough planning within the rails was completed using a Wirtgen mini planer & the spoil removed from site.

  • The carriageway was resurfaced using an SMA 20 binder course & 40mm thickness of SMA 10 surface course & compacted.

  • The footways were resurfaced in the same binder course & a 25mm thickness of a 6mm dense surface course.

  • The re-surfaced areas were swept to remove any loose stones, allowing the line marking to be completed.

  • The thermoplastic markings consisted of a large yellow hatched area, safety warnings, double yellow & single white lines.

  • The site was handed back to Volker on time, enabling them to install the new rails.
